One app, three ways to open it

Secret Chat AI is a web app: it runs at app.secret-chat.ai in whatever browser you already use, on any device, with nothing to download from an app store. That one app can be used in three ways. Open it in a browser tab and it works straight away. Install it on your phone or desktop and it gets its own icon and its own window, like a native app. Or, on a desktop computer, put it in your browser's sidebar with our free extension, so the chat stays open beside whatever you are reading or writing. Same account, same models, same privacy in all three — your conversations live in your own browser, never on our servers.

1. In any browser — no install needed

The plain way is the whole app already: go to app.secret-chat.ai, pick a model, ask. There is no sign-up wall — the free daily quota works without an account, and an account (email only) exists so that your credits and subscription survive a change of browser or device. Everything on the features list — the AI Council, projects, threads, attachments and voice input, image generation — is available in a tab. The two options below add convenience on top — and, on an iPhone, one capability a tab does not have (see below).

2. Installed on your phone or desktop (PWA)

Secret Chat AI is a Progressive Web App, which means your browser can install it: the app gets an icon on your home screen, taskbar or dock and opens in its own window, without the address bar and tabs around it. It is the same app as in the tab, kept up to date the way a website is — when a new version is ready, the app tells you and asks before switching — so there is no store, no download and no manual update.

The "Add to Home Screen" button

Open the app, go to Settings and press Add to Home Screen. Browsers do not let a website install itself, so the button does not do the install for you; instead it detects your operating system and browser and shows the exact steps for that combination, which differ more than they should:

  • iPhone and iPad — in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Since iOS 16.4, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iOS can offer the same item in their own Share menu; if yours does not show it, do this step in Safari.
  • Android — in Chrome, open the three-dot menu and tap Add to Home screen or Install app; Firefox (Install) and Opera (Add to → Home screen) have an equivalent in their menus.
  • Windows, macOS and Linux — in Chrome, Edge and Opera, click the install icon at the right end of the address bar and confirm. In Safari on macOS, use File → Add to Dock. Firefox on Windows can pin a site as a web app of its own (the Add tab to taskbar button in the address bar); on a Mac it cannot, and on Linux the feature is off by default — there, the sidebar extension below is the better fit.

Why install it on a phone

On Android and desktop the gain is convenience: an icon, a window of its own, one tap to open. On iPhone and iPad installing changes what the app can do, because iOS gives web apps added to the Home Screen two things a Safari tab does not get:

  • The "answer is ready" notification. A deep-research or multi-model answer can take a minute or more. The app can notify you when it lands — content-free, never the answer itself — but iOS delivers such notifications only to web apps added to the Home Screen, so in a Safari tab the toggle in Settings cannot work.   • Storage that is not swept away. Your chat history lives in your browser's database (that is the point — there is no copy on our servers). Safari deletes a website's stored data after seven days of using Safari without interacting with that site; WebKit exempts web apps added to the Home Screen from that rule, so an installed app keeps your chats through a long pause where a tab might have lost them. Installing is not a backup, though — export is the backup.

One consequence to know about on iOS: a Home Screen web app keeps its own storage, separate from Safari's tabs, so chats started in a Safari tab do not appear in the installed app and vice versa. Export from one and import into the other to move them. On Android and desktop Chrome and Edge the installed app shares the browser's storage, so the same chats show in both. Credits and subscriptions are tied to your account, not to a browser, so signing in restores them anywhere.

3. In your browser's sidebar — desktop only

On a desktop computer there is a third option: the free Secret Chat AI sidebar extension for Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox. It opens the whole app in the browser's side panel, so the chat is one click away and stays open beside whatever you are doing — draft a reply on the left and shape it on the right, read a long article and ask about the parts that need untangling as you reach them, run a claim through the AI Council without leaving the page it came from.

It is a thin shell around the same app: the same account, the same conversations as in a tab, and the same rule that your history stays in your browser. It is also deliberately blind to your browsing — the extension has no access to the pages you visit (no content scripts; its only permissions are its own two domains), so it cannot read or summarize the tab beside it. Paste the text or attach the file instead. The extension page has the details and the install steps per browser.

The extension is for desktop browsers only. It is built on the browser's side panel, and phone and tablet browsers do not have one: Chrome on Android runs no extensions at all, and neither Safari on iOS nor Firefox for Android — which do run some — offers a sidebar for an extension to open in. So there is no mobile version; on a phone, the installable web app is the equivalent. The install buttons are at the top of this page.

Which one to use

  • Phone or tablet — install the web app from the browser's Share or menu (Safari or another browser on iPhone, Chrome on Android). It is the only way to get the "answer is ready" notification on iOS, and it keeps your chats through long pauses.
  • Desktop, and the chat is your main window — install it from Chrome or Edge for a window and a taskbar icon of its own.
  • Desktop, and the chat is a companion to other work — the sidebar extension, in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. On Firefox for Mac it is also the only "install" there is.
  • Not sure, or somebody else's computer — a tab. It is the full app, and nothing about your history is left behind on our side either way.

Whichever you pick, the thing Secret Chat AI protects is the same: it removes you from your queries — no profile is built about you and no conversation is associated with you — but it does not remove the data from your messages, which still reach the model you chose as written. That limit is worth the same care in an installed app or a sidebar as in a tab.

Is there a Secret Chat AI app in the App Store or Google Play?
No. Secret Chat AI is a web app — you open it at app.secret-chat.ai in any browser, and if you want an icon on your phone or desktop you install it from the browser as a Progressive Web App (PWA). There is nothing to download from an app store and nothing to update by hand: the installed app runs the same code as the website, and when a new version is ready it asks before switching to it.
What does installing the app change?

Will the installed app show the chats I started in a browser tab?
