Private search means asking a question and getting a current, well-sourced answer from the live web — without a search engine logging who you are, what you looked for, or building a profile from it. On Secret Chat you ask the AI, it does the searching for you, and the answer comes back with sources. The difference is everything around that answer: the request is decoupled from your identity, and the whole conversation stays on your device. For the wider product, see our private AI chat page and the private AI models comparison.
Why ordinary search isn't private
A normal search engine ties every query to your IP address, your cookies, and often your account. Over time that becomes a detailed picture of your health worries, finances, plans, and curiosities — kept, analyzed, and frequently used to target you. Even "private" browser modes only stop your own device from remembering; the search company still sees the query and where it came from.
AI web search flips that around. Instead of you walking up to the search engine, the AI does the looking on your behalf and hands you a single, synthesized answer with citations. Secret Chat adds the missing piece — anonymity — so the answer is grounded in the live web but the searching is never traced back to you.
What the experience feels like
- Ask in plain language. Type a real question — "what changed in the latest EU privacy rules", "compare these two medications", "is this company still in business" — and get a written answer instead of ten blue links to sift through.
- Sources you can check. Answers come with citations, so you can open the original pages and verify anything that matters, rather than trusting a summary blindly.
- Pick how deep to go. A quick web lookup for fast facts, a dedicated search model for sourced answers, or a deeper research mode that reads across many pages for harder questions.
- Stay in one place. Follow-up questions keep their context, so you can refine and dig in without starting a new search every time.
What makes it private
- Your identity is hidden from the search. Secret Chat sits between you and the AI providers. They see Secret Chat making the request — not your name, your email, or your IP — so your searches aren't tied to you.
- Your history stays in your browser. Search conversations and any files you attach are stored locally on your own device. We don't keep a copy of your chats on our servers. Curious how that works? See our guide to local browser storage for AI chats.
- Email-only sign-up. No real name, no phone number, no profile-building — and the email is used only for account access and payment, never to store or associate your searches with you. There's no identity for your searches to attach to.
- A privacy report for every message. Each answer comes with a per-session report showing how the request was handled and, where the provider supports it, confirmation that a deletion request was sent.

Who it's for
Anyone who'd rather not have their questions logged and monetized: a lawyer researching case law, a clinician checking guidance, a journalist looking into a sensitive subject, or simply someone who finds it unsettling that every search they make is recorded forever. Private search lets you stay curious without leaving a trail.
The honest limit
Hiding who is asking is not the same as hiding what you typed. To actually search the web, the text of your question still has to reach the search provider. So don't paste personal data — names, account numbers, medical details — into a search; remove or redact it first, and a quick read-through before sending is always worth it.
One private account, every model
Search isn't locked to one AI. Ask GPT, then re-run the same question with Claude, Gemini, or Grok — in the same conversation, under the same email-only account, with the same local storage. And when you'd rather let the AI decide on its own whether a question even needs a web search, that's what private agentic AI models are for.
