Answers grounded in current sources

Perplexity searches the internet as it answers, opens and reads web pages, and gives you links to where its information came from. That makes it well suited to questions about recent events, prices, products, or anything that changes over time, where an up-to-date answer with sources you can click matters.

Research and fact-finding

Because it cites its sources, Perplexity is a strong starting point for research. You can read the answer for a quick overview and then follow the links to confirm the details, which is exactly how careful research should work.

No attachments on Perplexity

Perplexity's own API can read images and documents, but on Secret Chat the Perplexity model takes no attachments — no images, no PDFs, no documents. A note on verifying answers

Showing sources is a real advantage, but it isn't a guarantee of accuracy. A web-grounded answer can still misread or oversimplify a source, and the web itself contains plenty of mistakes. For anything important (legal, medical, financial, or time-sensitive) read the cited sources yourself and confirm the facts before you rely on them.

The consumer account and the API are two different privacy regimes

This distinction does most of the work on this page, so it's worth stating outright. On a consumer Perplexity account (Free, Pro or Max), AI data retention is on by default: sessions are kept until you delete them, and the opt-out applies going forward — switching it off does not withdraw what was already collected. You can delete a whole session or project, but not one answer inside it.

The Sonar API, which is how Secret Chat reaches Perplexity, is the opposite arrangement: Perplexity states it retains no customer content and does not train on it, keeping only billing metadata. One consequence is worth understanding rather than glossing over: there is no per-response deletion API for Perplexity, and that is not a gap. Nothing is stored upstream for such a call to delete, which is why your Session Privacy Report says so instead of printing a deletion status that would be meaningless.

Why a private Perplexity matters

The questions you search are revealing. What you are researching, buying, worrying about, or planning can paint a detailed picture of you over time. Whenever that's sensitive, you don't want those searches stored in an account tied to your identity. Sending a query to any web-connected AI means the text leaves your device and reaches a third party.

How a secure Perplexity alternative works

The practical way to get a more private Perplexity experience is through a secure gateway. Instead of you holding a personal account, the gateway holds an API account and forwards requests on your behalf. The provider sees the gateway as the caller, not your name, your email, or your IP. Registration uses an email only — no real name, no phone number, no profile-building. Your search history and uploaded files are stored in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB for text chats, OPFS for images and PDFs); we don't keep a server-side copy of your conversations.

Searches routed through the API

Perplexity is accessed through its API rather than a personal account, and your requests are routed through Secret Chat's infrastructure so your IP address is not exposed to the provider directly. Each message can produce a per-message Session Privacy Report (PDF) that records how the request was handled. Perplexity's API is governed by its own data terms, so always check the current official policy if that matters for your use.

Documents: on the paid models

For document work, switch to a paid model: GPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok take images, PDFs and ordinary documents — Word (.docx), Excel and other spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .ods), PowerPoint (.pptx), CSV, Markdown, plain text, source code and zip archives of them. Images and PDFs are sent to the model as files; every other document is converted to text in your browser and only that text is sent, so the original file never leaves your device. Honest scope: what this is and isn't

A private Perplexity setup like this removes the most common privacy weaknesses of a personal account: account-linked search history and identity exposure to the provider. It makes web-grounded AI search safer to use, not completely anonymous. Your query still reaches the provider to be answered, so deciding what is appropriate to search, and removing personal or confidential details first, remains your responsibility.
