What Claude is good at

Each leading model has its own character, and Claude's is calm and considered. These are the areas where it tends to stand out, keeping in mind that exact capabilities depend on the model version you're using.

Long-form writing with a natural voice

Claude is a favorite for writing that needs to read well: articles, reports, emails, and documents. It tends to produce clear, well-organized prose with a warm, human tone, and it's good at matching a style you ask for.

Careful, nuanced reasoning

Claude has a thoughtful approach to questions that have more than one side. It's comfortable weighing trade-offs, explaining its thinking, and handling sensitive or subtle topics with care, which makes it a strong partner for analysis and decision-making.

Summarizing and working through long material

Claude handles large amounts of text well, so it's well suited to summarizing long documents, pulling out the key points, and answering questions about something lengthy you share with it.

Coding and explaining

Claude is also capable with code (writing it, explaining it in plain language, and helping track down problems) alongside its strengths in writing and analysis.

Working with images and PDFs

Claude can look at images you share and read PDFs you upload, then discuss or summarize them. That makes it handy for getting to grips with a document or a screenshot without retyping anything.

Claude doesn't create images itself (that isn't one of its built-in skills), but you can switch to another model in the same workspace when you need a picture. The result is the convenience of an assistant that organizes the work for you, with full manual control whenever you want it.

Why a private Claude matters

People bring Claude their most considered work: drafts, analysis, sensitive correspondence. That's exactly the kind of material you don't want stored in a consumer account or tied to your identity. Whenever the content is confidential, sending it through a standard chatbot means the text leaves your device, may be retained, and can be linked back to you.

A privacy setting is a policy promise, not a structural change. A private Claude setup changes the structure instead: who holds the account, where your conversation history lives, and which data terms apply to the request.

Where the consumer Claude app falls short

The standard Claude app is convenient, but it has several properties that make it a weak fit for confidential work:

• Account-linked history. Conversations are tied to your personal account, creating a long-term trail.
• Server-side storage. Your chat history lives on the provider's servers.
• Consumer data terms. Consumer plans can apply different retention and training rules than the business API.
• Identity exposure. Your name, email, and network are attached to what you ask.

How a secure Claude alternative works

The practical way to get a more private Claude experience is through a secure gateway. Instead of you holding a consumer account with Anthropic, the gateway holds an API account and forwards requests on your behalf. This isn't a self-hosted model, and it doesn't turn Claude into an open-source model you run locally. It's a different access path to the same Claude models, governed by the Anthropic API's data terms rather than the consumer terms.

What Secret Chat does as a private Claude setup

Anonymized access: no profile, no association

This is the core of it. Secret Chat is an anonymizer: we build no profile of you and never store your queries against your identity or associate them with you. The email you sign up with is used only for account access and payment, never to link your prompts to you. So every request reaches Anthropic with no name, account, or IP attached, and you use Claude as a stranger. That reframes retention: even where Anthropic's API keeps data for a window, what is kept is not linked to you. The honest boundary is that this anonymizes who is asking, not what the prompt says. Anthropic still reads your text to answer it, so remove any names or identifiers you wouldn't want it to see.

Minimal account, local storage

Registration uses an email only — no real name, no phone number, no profile-building. Your conversation history and uploaded files are stored in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB for text chats, OPFS for images and PDFs); we don't keep a server-side copy of your conversations.

Claude accessed through the Anthropic API

According to Anthropic's published API terms, traffic sent through the API is not used to train its models, and is normally deleted within 30 days. The exceptions are worth knowing rather than discovering later: content flagged under Anthropic's usage policy can be retained for up to two years, its trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven, and anything under a legal obligation for as long as that obligation lasts. Anthropic exposes no per-response deletion API, so the 30-day cycle, rather than a deletion call, is what clears ordinary traffic. Each message in Secret Chat can produce a per-message Session Privacy Report (PDF) that records the retention regime that applied, so you have a record on file. Note that explicit per-session deletion requests are available for some providers but not all, so always check the current official policy for the model you use.

Documents: images, PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more

For document work, Secret Chat supports images, PDFs and ordinary documents — Word (.docx), Excel and other spreadsheets (.xlsx, .xls, .ods), PowerPoint (.pptx), CSV, Markdown, plain text, source code and zip archives of them. Images and PDFs are sent to the model as files; every other document is converted to text in your browser and only that text is sent, so the original file never leaves your device. See attachments for the limits, and remember that a spreadsheet carries whole columns of what you may not mean to share — check it before you attach it.

Honest scope: what this is and isn't

A private Claude setup like this removes the most common privacy weaknesses of a consumer account: account-linked cloud history, identity exposure to the model provider, and consumer-tier data defaults. It makes Claude safer to use, not completely anonymous. Your prompt still reaches Anthropic's API to be processed, so deciding what is appropriate to include, and removing personal or confidential details first, remains your responsibility.
