Because Secret Chat AI keeps your conversations in your own browser rather than on our servers, export is your backup — and the only one there is. It is also how you move your work to a new machine. This is one of the features of Secret Chat AI, the AI aggregator.
Exporting one chat or one project
You do not have to take everything. Open the actions menu on any chat or project and choose Export Chat or Export Project, and you get a ZIP of just that one — a project export bringing its instructions and every chat inside it, a chat export bringing its messages, its threads and its attachments.
This is the option you want most of the time:
- Handing one piece of work to someone else — a colleague, a client, your own other machine — without shipping your entire history along with it.
- Archiving a finished project so you can delete it from the browser and still have it if it comes back.
- Keeping a single important conversation somewhere safer than a browser database.
Both land in the same format as the full export, so either one can be imported back the same way.
Exporting everything
Settings → Export All Data produces a single ZIP file containing:
- All projects, with their configuration and their instructions.
- All chats — both loose ones and those inside projects, including threads.
- All messages, with their content and metadata.
- All attachments — images and PDFs.
Large histories take a moment to package, and the app shows progress while it works.
Importing it back
Settings → Import takes any of those ZIPs — the whole history, one project or one chat — and loads it into whatever browser you are in. You choose in advance what should happen when something in the file already exists locally:
- Do not replace existing records (the default) — your current version wins, and only genuinely new material is added. This is the safe option for merging one machine's history into another's.
- Replace existing records — the file's version wins. Use this when restoring a backup over a browser whose data you no longer trust.
Import merges rather than wiping: nothing you have locally disappears just because it is absent from the file.
When you actually need this
- Moving to a new computer, browser or phone. Nothing syncs, because there is nothing on our side to sync from. Export from the old one, import into the new one.
- Before clearing browser data. "Clear site data", some privacy-cleaner tools and certain aggressive browser settings will take your chat history with them, permanently.
- As a routine backup. Browsers can and do evict local storage under disk pressure. If you have work you would miss, export it on a schedule you will actually keep.
- To keep an archive somewhere else. Your own encrypted drive, your own machine — a copy that is yours rather than anyone's cloud.
Handle the file carefully
The export is not encrypted. It is a plain ZIP holding the full text of every conversation and every file you ever attached, so that any tool can read it and you are never locked out of your own data — but that also means anyone who gets the file can read all of it, without a password and without your account. Treat it as you would a folder of private documents: store it on an encrypted disk or in an encrypted archive, and think twice before emailing it to yourself or dropping it in a shared cloud folder. An exported history is often the single most sensitive file on a machine, precisely because the app was careful with it everywhere else.
