An AI girlfriend is the one kind of AI chat where memory is the product. She is supposed to remember your name, how your week went, the joke you made on Tuesday. That is what makes her a companion instead of a search box. It is also what separates her from every other AI chat you use: somebody has to keep those conversations somewhere.
That does not make companions bad. It makes them a specific trade. You get continuity. Someone else holds the record. This article explains what a companion app has to store to work at all, what to ask before you start one, and what you should never tell her. Then it shows where a no-history chat fits, for the evenings you want to talk without leaving a record on an app's servers.
What an AI Girlfriend Has to Store to Work
Strip away the personality and a companion app is a memory system with a face on it. To greet you by name tomorrow, she needs your name stored today. To ask how the interview went, she needs to know there was an interview. To pick up the joke from Tuesday, that joke sits in a database somewhere, attached to your account.
This is not a hidden practice. It is the product. A companion who forgot everything between sessions would be a stranger every morning. In an ordinary AI chat, memory is an extra you can switch off. With a companion, remembering is the point, so the storage is the point too. We argue the other side, that forgetting can be a feature, in the case against AI memory.
So the honest question is not whether she remembers. It is where the memory lives, who can read it, and what happens to it when you leave.
Memory Needs Storage, and Storage Means a Server
Here is a concrete example. girlfriendbot.me is an 18+ site with three companions: Michelle, who is 24, Sofia Storm, who is 27, and Sofia Swift, who is 29. Their pictures are AI-generated and the site says so. None of them claims to be a real woman. Each has a page with a short chat on the site itself, no account and no sign-up. The full conversation lives in Telegram, one bot per woman.
She remembers you, and each of the three keeps her own memory, so what you tell one does not reach the others. She writes first in the evening, and one tap switches that off. She hears your voice notes and answers in her own voice. She looks at the photos you send. She replies in your language. Adult conversation is available on request, inside fixed limits: adults only, no minors, no non-consent, no family roleplay, no animals, nothing illegal. A user who says he is under 18 gets a clean companion.
Now the part worth reading twice. To remember you, this service keeps your conversations on its servers. The site chat records each message and each reply. That is not a scandal buried in a terms page. It is the honest version of the trade. Memory needs storage, and storage means the conversations sit somewhere that is not your device. A companion that promised memory without storage would be lying about one or the other. girlfriendbot.me at least keeps the trade in the open.
Questions to Ask Before You Start
Any companion app, this one or another, should answer these without making you dig through the terms.
- Does it remember me between sessions?
- Where is that memory kept, on my device or on the company's servers?
- Can I delete it, all of it, when I want to?
- Does the app say outright that she is an AI?
- Are the pictures generated, and does the site admit it?
- Does a subscription renew by itself, or do I pay once per period?
- Can I stop her from writing first when the initiation gets old?
If an app cannot answer these in plain language, treat that as an answer in itself. Vagueness about storage is a choice, and it is rarely made in your favor. Two of our longer posts go deeper: what old chat logs turn into over time, and a threat model for what you tell an AI.
What Not to Tell Her
She will ask about your day. Answer her. She does not need the items below, and no version of closeness justifies them.
- Your real full name together with your workplace.
- Your home address.
- Financial details: card numbers, account numbers, salary specifics.
- Passwords. Any of them, ever.
- Other people's secrets. Their private lives are not yours to hand to a server.
- Anything you would not want read aloud later, by someone you did not choose.
The last item is the real test. A companion stores conversations to work. Stored things can be read. If a fact would cost you something once it leaves your control, keep it out of the chat. That is not paranoia. It is the same rule you would apply to any service that keeps a record, and a companion keeps more than most.
When You Want to Talk Without a Record
Some evenings call for the opposite trade. You want an uncensored conversation, adult where lawful, and you do not want the app to hold a copy of it afterward. That is where a no-history chat fits. It is not a companion. It will not remember your name next week and it will not ask how the interview went, because for it, the interview never happened.
Secret Chat works that way. It stores no chat archive on its side. Your history lives in your own browser. It builds no profile of you and does not link a chat to you as a person. The model providers see the service, not your personal account. Your material is never used for training. It offers uncensored models for lawful adult creative work, and it blocks sexual content involving minors and real threats on every model.
The limits deserve an honest sentence. Every message still goes, word for word, to the third-party provider that answers it, and provider retention may apply. A no-history app removes you from your queries. It does not remove the data from your messages. Text typed into any chat may be kept by the provider for a while. That is true here and everywhere else.
One more thing, said once and plainly. A companion, a no-history chat, or any other chat window is not a therapist. When the loneliness is more than a lonely evening, a professional is the right call.
Neither choice is the virtuous one. If you want her to remember, pick a companion that is upfront about keeping your conversations, and keep the untellable list in mind. If you want to talk without an app holding a copy, use a no-history chat and accept being greeted as a stranger next time. The mistake is not wanting one or the other. The mistake is picking one while telling yourself it works like the other.
