AI Superapps Want to Be Your Everything
That's Exactly the Problem

A year ago, a chatbot was a box you typed questions into. Today the same box wants to book your hotel, buy your gifts, read your inbox, browse the web on your behalf, run your smart speakers, brief you before you wake up, and show you ads calibrated by everything you have ever told it. None of these arrived as a grand announcement of intent. Each arrived as a feature — useful, individually defensible, easy to say yes to.

The industry has a name for where this is heading: the superapp. And the pitch is genuinely appealing — one assistant that knows your context and handles your life end to end. This article is about the cost of that pitch, which is structural rather than hypothetical: an assistant that does everything must see everything, and an assistant that sees everything is the closest thing to a complete record of a person that any company has ever held. The features are real. So is the concentration.

What a Superapp Actually Is

The reference design is WeChat. What began as a Chinese messaging app became the place where more than a billion people also pay their bills, hail taxis, book doctors, run small businesses and file paperwork — an operating system for daily life, with one company in the middle of it all. Western tech has envied that position for a decade; Elon Musk was explicit that he bought Twitter as an "accelerant" toward exactly such an "everything app."

What nobody quite managed to build around a social feed, the industry is now building around a chat box — and the chat box is a better shell for it than a feed ever was. A feed shows you things; an assistant acts for you, and acting for you requires access. Your calendar, to schedule. Your email, to summarize. Your payment method, to buy. Your browsing, to help. Your home, to control. Every capability the assistant gains is, by construction, a new stream of your life flowing into one account. That is not a side effect of the superapp strategy. It is the strategy.

Twelve Months of Becoming Everything

This is not a trend piece about ambitions. Here is what actually shipped, company by company.

OpenAI: from chatbot to platform in one year

Between September 2025 and this summer, ChatGPT grew, in order: Pulse (September 2025), a proactive daily briefing assembled from your chats, your feedback and connected services like Gmail and Google Calendar — the assistant starting conversations with you, rather than the reverse; Instant Checkout (September 29, 2025), letting US users complete purchases from Etsy sellers — with over a million Shopify merchants announced as coming next — without leaving the conversation, powered by an open Agentic Commerce Protocol built with Stripe, with merchants paying OpenAI a fee on completed purchases; Apps in ChatGPT (October 6, 2025), announced at DevDay alongside a claimed 800 million weekly users — Spotify, Zillow, Booking.com, Expedia, Canva, Coursera and Figma running inside the chat, with an Apps SDK for everyone else; and Atlas (October 21, 2025), a full web browser with ChatGPT built in, "browser memories" that let it retain facts from the sites you visited — stored on OpenAI's servers — and an agent mode that could click and type on your behalf.

Then came the consolidation, which is the more revealing move. In 2026 OpenAI folded the experiments back into the core product: ads arrived in ChatGPT's free and cheapest tiers on February 9 — in the US first, spreading internationally since; Pulse was retired in June in favor of scheduled tasks that live inside ChatGPT itself; and in July OpenAI announced that Atlas, the desktop ChatGPT app and Codex would become one application, with Atlas itself shut down on August 9. Google: the assistant becomes the operating layer

Google is running the same play from the other direction — it already has the operating systems, and is installing the AI into all of them. Gemini is in Gmail, Docs and Drive through Workspace; it moved into Chrome in September 2025; Gemini for Home — announced as the replacement for Google Assistant on existing smart speakers and displays — began rolling out in early access in October 2025. And in August 2026 Google announced the end state: from September 4, 2026, most Android phones and tablets — and the Wear OS watches paired to them — lose Google Assistant in a phased rollout, with Gemini taking its place. For hundreds of millions of people, talking to Google's AI will not be a choice of app at all — it will be the default interface of the phone and the watch, and, as the home and TV rollouts complete, of the living room too. The convenience is obvious. So is what it implies: the same assistant, under one account, present in your email, your documents, your browser, your pocket and your living room.

xAI: the model and the social network are one company

In March 2025, xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal valuing xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion. The stated logic was not subtle — the announcement described combining the two companies' "data, models, compute, distribution and talent." Grok sits inside X, X's posts feed Grok, and Musk has said X plans to put ads inside Grok's answers. Chatbot, social feed, ad system: one company, one data estate.

Meta: the assistant you cannot uninstall, in the garden you cannot leave

Meta AI is built into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger — not an app you choose but a layer across the apps you already use. Since December 16, 2025, what you say to it feeds ad targeting across those apps, with no opt-out switch outside a few regions where privacy law stands in the way; the closest thing offered since is a per-chat "Incognito" mode announced in May 2026, whose messages are not saved and disappear by default — something you must remember to invoke, conversation by conversation, not a switch. And in the same season, Meta closed the door to the alternatives: from January 15, 2026, WhatsApp's Business API prohibits general-purpose third-party chatbots — ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity had all operated there, and were shut out. Inside Meta's walls the assistant on offer is Meta's own, and it talks to the ad system.

The Problem Is Not Any One Feature. It Is the Sum.

Judged one at a time, almost every feature above survives scrutiny. A briefing built from your interests is useful. Checkout without retyping card numbers is convenient. A browser that remembers what you read is helpful. That is precisely why the individual-feature frame is the wrong one — nobody ever opts into a surveillance architecture; they opt into forty conveniences, one at a time.

Step back and look at what the sum knows. The chat knows what you are worried about, in your own words — the symptom, the debt, the resignation draft, the divorce question. The browser knows what you read. The checkout knows what you buy and what you can afford. The connected inbox knows who writes to you and about what. The home devices know when you are there. The memory feature binds it together into a durable, queryable model of you, and — where ad personalization applies — that model has a paying audience. Social media spent fifteen years assembling profiles by inference, guessing that you might be pregnant or job-hunting from your clicks. A superapp does not need to infer. You told it, in sentences, with context, under an account with your name on it. Four Structural Risks the Pitch Never Mentions

1. One account, total blast radius

Concentration converts every risk you already had into a correlated one. A breach of a service that held your chats was bad; a breach of the account that holds your chats, browsing memory, purchase history and connected email is a different category of event — one incident, a whole life. The same arithmetic applies to legal process: your conversations, sitting identified under your account, are reachable by subpoena and discovery, and the more of your life routes through that one account, the more a single order reaches. Compartmentalization — the oldest privacy tool there is — is exactly what a superapp exists to eliminate.

2. The profile is the moat

Ask why every superapp push leads with memory, and the business answer is plainer than the product answer: an assistant that knows you is an assistant you cannot cheaply leave. The accumulated context is a switching cost — start fresh elsewhere and the new assistant knows nothing — and, as the ad-personalization settings now make explicit, the same accumulation is a targeting asset. Useful to you, valuable about you: the dual-use that made the social graph worth hundreds of billions, rebuilt around a transcript of your inner monologue. 3. The features die; the data practices persist

Notice how much of the twelve-month timeline above is already dead. Pulse: retired within nine months. Atlas: shut down within ten. This is normal platform behavior — experiments get folded in — but it carries a lesson people miss: the product you agreed to give data to is not the product that ends up holding it. Atlas's browser memories lived on OpenAI's servers; the browser is gone, the company that held them remains, and the browsing capability re-emerges inside the core app under the next product's terms. Consent given to a feature is durable in one direction only.

4. The walls go up, and your choice of model goes with them

WhatsApp's chatbot ban is the clearest signal in this entire story. Rival assistants operated inside WhatsApp; as of January 15, 2026, they are prohibited, and Meta AI remains. Regulators read it exactly this way: in June 2026 the European Commission imposed interim measures — a tool it had used only once before since 2004 — ordering Meta to restore rival AI assistants' free access to WhatsApp in the EU while its antitrust investigation runs. Outside the EU, the wall stands. A superapp does not just want your data — it wants to be the only counterparty, which means the platform picks your model for you and no rival answer ever appears next to its own. Model choice turns out to be a privacy property and a quality property at once: a single assistant that is wrong, biased or tuned toward engagement has no one standing next to it to say so. Unbundling on Purpose: What to Actually Do

The good news is that the superapp bargain is still optional, and declining it does not mean declining AI. It means refusing the consolidation while keeping the capability.

  • Separate the confidant from the errand-runner. The assistant that books flights under your name and card does a job that is identified by nature. The one you ask about the symptom, the debt or the resignation is doing a different job, and nothing forces those to be the same account — that separation is the single highest-leverage move available.
  • Treat agent permissions like app permissions, because that is what they are. Connected email, calendar, browsing memory, checkout: each is a standing grant, not a one-time answer. Review them the way you would review which apps hold your location.
  • Flip the toggles that exist — training defaults and ad personalization first; our opt-out guide maps them all. Then remember what toggles cannot do: they modulate the profile, they do not remove the account that anchors it.
  • Assume anything said inside a walled garden feeds the garden. Meta AI's ad pipeline is documented and switchless; conduct yourself there accordingly.

How Secret Chat AI Fits — and Its Honest Limits

Secret Chat AI is built as the deliberate opposite of a superapp, and the difference is architectural, not rhetorical. It does one job — private access to the top models: GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity — and refuses the accumulation that makes the superapp model work. It is an anonymizer: it builds no profile of you, and no chat is ever associated with you. Your queries reach the models anonymously, through their business APIs, under the gateway's credentials rather than any identity of yours, and they are never used for training. There is no memory feature assembling a durable model of you, no connected inbox, no checkout, no ad system — your conversations live in your own browser's local storage, not on our servers, so there is no server-side archive for any of those things to mine. Registration takes an email, used only for account access and payment; your prompts are never stored against it. And where a superapp locks you to its one house model, an identity-free gateway does the opposite: the AI Council sends one question to several models from different companies in parallel — up to a Quartet of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok — with a referee building a claim-by-claim disagreement table. No superapp will ever show you a rival's answer next to its own; a service you pay for has no reason not to.

The limits, stated plainly, because unstated limits are how people get burned. Secret Chat AI removes you from your queries — it does not remove the data from your messages.
