Google's Nano Banana 2.1 is now live on Secret Chat AI. The image generation and conversational editing model replaces Nano Banana 2 in place. If you had Nano Banana 2 selected, you already have 2.1; there is nothing to enable. Nano Banana Pro remains unchanged.
What Nano Banana 2.1 Is
Nano Banana 2.1 is the friendly name for gemini-nano-banana-2.1. Google calls it the latest high-efficiency model for generating images and editing them through conversation. It updates Nano Banana 2, formally Gemini 3.1 Flash Image; it isn't a new Pro model. Google's model page was updated on October 6. Our servers first saw 2.1 the next day, and it went live here that day.
The model accepts text, images, video and PDFs as inputs through Google's API, and can return image and text output. Its three image sizes are 1K, 2K and 4K. Google describes the update as keeping Flash-level speed while improving visual quality, prompt following, recurring-character consistency and text inside pictures. The shorter catalog description names the same core changes.
What Google Improved Over Nano Banana 2
Google lists concrete trouble spots that 2.1 is meant to handle better:
- Visual quality and realism at every resolution. A product shot should hold up better when you move from a 1K draft to a 4K final.
- Wide pictures without repeated tiles. Google says it fixed tiling artifacts on its extra-wide 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1 formats at 2K and 4K, where a texture or background object might otherwise repeat.
- More accurate text and infographic layouts. Posters, menus and diagrams depend on words landing in the requested place and staying legible.
- Stronger multi-image fusion. Google's API supports up to 14 reference images, with consistency for up to four characters and fidelity for up to ten objects. In practical terms, that gives a comic with a recurring cast or a staged product scene more source material to work from. It is a model limit, not a guarantee that every interface will accept or preserve all 14 perfectly.
- Grounding with Google Web and Image Search. The model can consult search results while generating, though that capability is not switched on here.
- Configurable thinking. Google's API offers minimal, medium and high thinking levels, with medium as its default. Secret Chat AI leaves the model on that default rather than adding another control to the picker.
What You Can Control Here
Choose the Image entry in the Image Generator, then open Settings and pick Nano Banana 2.1. It sits at the Standard moderation level beside GPT Image 2.5 Flare, GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, Nano Banana Pro, Grok Imagine 2.0 and the Upscaler. GPT Image 2.5 Flare is still the model the generator opens on; Nano Banana 2.1 is not the default.
You can choose a style preset, set resolution to 1K, 2K or 4K, and pick 1:1, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4, 4:3, 4:5, 5:4, 9:16, 16:9 or 21:9. The default is 1K. The Nano Banana models are the only ones here that reach 4K. One picture is requested per message, and Nano Banana 2.1 has no variants control. Occasionally Google sends a second take for the same prompt; when that happens, you get both JPEGs. GPT Image and Grok Imagine can return up to ten.
There are four gaps between Google's API and our picker. The 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1 shapes are not offered here. Search grounding is off, and thinking level is not a setting. You attach reference pictures to your message, but we don't promise the API's 14-reference ceiling.
How to Generate or Edit a Picture
- Open the Image Generator and choose Image.
- Open Settings, select Nano Banana 2.1, then choose the aspect ratio, resolution and style you want.
- Write the picture you want. For an edit, attach one or several pictures and state what should change. You can attach a PDF for the model to use as input too.
- Keep talking in the same chat. A follow-up such as “same shot, but at night” refines the last picture because the generator carries the conversation forward.
Use the attached character reference to make a three-panel 16:9 comic. Keep the character's face, green raincoat and red backpack consistent in every panel. Set the scene at a rainy night market. Put the exact title “LAST TRAIN HOME” in clean white letters above panel one, with no other text.
Smart Agentic Gemini Draws With It Too
The Image Generator is the manual route. Smart Agentic Gemini, available in the paid Gemini family, can decide that a picture is the right answer during a chat; Nano Banana 2.1 then draws it. Gemini's work generators also use it for presentation slide pictures and social-post pictures. The agentic models page explains the routing.
What Privacy Means for an Image Request
Secret Chat AI is a gateway, so you don't need a Google account. You register with an email address alone, and the request reaches Google as a stranger's rather than being tied to your identity. We keep no archive of your chats; generated pictures remain in your own browser. Your prompts are never used for training.
Your prompt and every picture or document you attach are sent to Google so Nano Banana 2.1 can draw or edit the result. Whether to redact a sensitive detail first is your decision. Image attachments have their EXIF and other metadata stripped by default, but the picture still shows what it shows: a face, address or document in the pixels remains visible. Our guide to EXIF and uploaded-file metadata explains the distinction.
A Better Everyday Nano Banana
Nano Banana 2.1 is a focused update to the model people already used here: cleaner poster text, steadier recurring characters, more faithful reference combinations and fewer artifacts in wide scenes. Move to 2K or 4K when you need larger output, and use follow-up messages instead of rebuilding a prompt after every edit.
One nearby feature is strictly for words. The AI Council sends one text question to several model families and shows where their answers agree or conflict. It does not generate or compare images.
