Method 1: ChatGPT Without an Account (Quickest, Weakest)

OpenAI lets you use ChatGPT without signing up: open chatgpt.com and type. No email, no phone. One geographic caveat that this guide previously missed: signed-out access is limited to supported regions and is not available across most of Europe, the UK excepted, so for many readers Method 1 isn't on the table at all. Note too that signed-out chats are used for training by default; the "Improve the model for everyone" switch is reachable from the bottom-right menu, and being browser-tied it resets when you clear cookies or change browser or device.

• What it hides: your registered identity. There's no account for the history to attach to.
• What it does not hide: your IP address and device fingerprint still reach OpenAI, conversations may still be used for training (the opt-out toggle exists in the no-login settings too — turn it off), and the tier is limited: a reduced model, no file uploads, no history to return to, and a quick nudge toward registration.
• Good for: one-off casual questions when you happen to be logged out.

Method 2: Temporary Chat (Private From Your Own History, Not From OpenAI)

Logged in, you can toggle Temporary Chat for a conversation: it never appears in your sidebar, doesn't read or write Memory, and is excluded from training. • Weakness: you must remember the toggle every time, and you lose the conversation forever.

Method 3: Lock Down a Regular Account (Not Anonymous, but Less Fed)

If you keep using ChatGPT normally, three settings materially reduce the footprint: turn off Improve the model for everyone (Settings → Data Controls), so conversations aren't used for training; review and clear Memory; and delete conversations you wouldn't want stored (permanent deletion within 30 days). What None of These Methods Hide

Every method here works on the envelope: the account, the IP, the history. None of them touches the contents, and that's where most people give themselves away.

• Anything you type stays legible. Your name, your employer, your client's case number, the street you live on. DuckDuckGo is explicit that it strips identifying metadata, not identifying information inside your prompt.
• Uploaded files carry their own identifiers (author fields, revision history, GPS in photos), and may be moderated by the model provider.
